On 6-8 June, UNDP joined the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) of the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in hosting the 3rd annual Protected Areas Forum in Port Moresby.
Over a hundred representatives from Government, local and international NGOs, the private sector and local grassroots movements attended the Forum to find ways to improve the management of Papua New Guinea’s protected areas. This year, the Forum focused on three key themes: national policy, land use planning and the blue economy

2023 Protected Area Forum Report
The second national Protected Area Forum was held in Port Moresby from May 30 – June 3, 2022. It brought together protected area practitioners, researchers, academics, the private sector, potential donors and local communities who manage or support protected areas in PNG, to share their experiences, insights and lessons learned on issues impacting protected areas. This year, the Forum was followed by a week of training on the Natural Resource Management Hub, Adaptive Management, and Business Planning and Management Training. All presentations are available for download at this link.
The forum enables protected area practitioners, researchers, academics, the private sector, potential donors and local communities who manage or support protected areas in PNG, to share their experiences, insights and lessons learned on issues impacting protected areas. It contributes to the review and prioritization of national priorities for effective protected area management in the country.
